Public Forum for Families Affected by Autism
“Family Focus on Autism." November 13, 6:30-8:30. Rm. 123 Capitol Building, St. Paul. Contact: Brad Trahan, Cell 507-254-8901. Email: AutismTaskForce@senate.mn.
Parents and caregivers of individuals who have autism are
invited to testify about the issues they face, including the availability and effectiveness of services, treatment and therapy.
During the 2008 Legislative Session the Minnesota Senate passed a Senate Resolution which led to the creation of the Minnesota Autism Task Force made up of individuals designated by both the Senate and the Governor. The task force is chaired by Brad Trahan of Rochester, a parent of son with autism.
“We have assembled a very impressive and inclusive group of parents, professionals, legislators and representatives from the Departments of Health, Human Services and Education. Through a series of planned public forums we are asking the autism community to help us focus the spotlight on autism issues so that we can make meaningful recommendations to the legislature and the Governor,” Trahan said.
Members of the Autism Task Force includes Senators David Senjem (R-Rochester) and Terri Bonoff (D- Minnetonka), representatives from the state’s departments of education, health, and human services, a medical professional, a provider, two parents, two representatives from advocacy organizations and a public school representative. The task force will conduct a series of public forums to provide ample opportunity for input from the entire autism community, which includes families and individuals affected by autism, health professionals, service providers, counties, and public schools.
Parents and other caregivers of children on the autism spectrum are
invited to attend the first public forum scheduled for November 13th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the State Capitol Building in St. Paul. To provide input in advance, or for those who cannot attend, parents and caregivers are urged to contact the Autism Task Force directly at AutismTaskForce@senate.mn.
