Design Your Own Album Cover 2-Day Class @ Crossings

Music album cover art can be as iconic and as much a measure of popular culture as the songs inside the packaging. What would the album cover for your favorite song look like? Discover how to use the images that float through your mind as you're listening to a song, along with graphic design elements, to paint a CD cover for your favorite song.


Students will learn the building blocks of graphic design – such as lines, shapes and textures as well as alignment, contrast, white space and other elements – to create an effective composition. Basic to advanced brush strokes, color choice, and other painting techniques will be explored. Lettering and calligraphy books will be on-hand for those who wish to use words on their covers.

Students will create a painted “album cover” on 6” x 6” x 2” canvas in this two-day class. Students should choose their song before class starts, and should bring with them several images (clipped from magazines, etc.) to which they can refer while creating their CD cover art. They'll also want to bring the lyrics, if possible. (Please bring only appropriate lyrics and images for this multi-age class.) Double-spaced lyrics, or phrases from the songs, can be used on the sides of the canvas.

Licensed art educator J. Marie Hoerle is a certified faux finish artist and has been a graphic designer since 1997.

“Design Your Own Album Cover” happens Wednesday and Thursday, December 29-30, and cost is $29 plus an $8 supply fee. Hours for grades 1-5 are 10 a.m. to noon both days; hours for grades 6-10 are 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. 732-7616 or www.crossingsatcarnegie.com
