SEMYO AUDITIONS As of May 2008, SEMYO is holding auditions for new students for the 2008-2009 season. Beginning brass, woodwinds, and percussion musicians are encouraged to audition for SEMYO’s newest band, the Symphonic Winds. The Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras (SEMYO) is non-profit organization comprised of four youth orchestras and ensembles for young musician from grades three through twelve. Based in Rochester, SEMYO orchestras and ensembles meet during the school yearon Saturday mornings for rehearsals and perform six major concerts in the region each season. YOUTH GRAND PRIX SERIES A series of races offered to youth 18 and under. It costs $5 to join and everybody who participates will receive a certificate, medal, and t-shirt. In addition, there will be awards based on number of races run during the season. The goal is to promote an active healthy lifestyle for young people and emphasize participation more than competition. MED-CITY KIDS MARATHON The Med-City Kids Marathon is May 24, 10:30 at Soldier's Field Park. Kids in grades 1-8 train ahead of time and log 25 miles leading up to race day. ALL COMERS TRACK MEETS Grab your kids and their running shoes. The All Comer's Track Meets are held on select Tuesdays during the summer. GRASP GRASP is an academic workbook program designed for students who have completed grades K-8 to maintain their skills over the summer months. Students complete nine lessons in math, reading or both over the summer. Each lesson takes about one hour to complete. They mail their answer sheets to Community Education for correcting and receive their scores back in the mail. Students successfully completing the course receive a certificate and medal. Sample materials are on display at the Northrop Community Education Office. Students will receive a packet of materials by June 11. Please indicate grade level completed and subject on the registration form. Fee for one subject is $30, fee for both reading and math is $56. S.N.A.P. BUS The S.N.A.P. Bus, sponsored by Child Care Resource and Referral, offers free, fun summer activities. On the bus there are books available for the children to read with their parent(s) or with one of the SOS volunteers. The bus also carries paint and easels for those that would like to paint. There's lots of different craft supplies (glitter, popsicle stick, tissue paper, sequins, foam shapes) for those that like to glue stuff to paper to create their pictures. For the sports fan, there are balls on the bus, which can be used for a game of kick ball. The SOS volunteers are there to help get the game going and to guide them during their game. SANDBOX SAND FUNDRAISER The annual Rochester Jaycees Sandbox Fill fundraiser is here. The Jaycees use proceeds from this fundraiser to assist local charitable organizations (Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, Special Olympics, and lots more) with grants and project assistance. All orders must be received by May 12, 5pm. Sand is $10 per wheelbarrow (about 225 lbs.), and will be delivered to your home on Saturday, May 17. Limit of 5 loads per order. TOTAL ARTS DAY CAMP 2008 @ ROCHESTER ART CENTER Total Arts Day Camp is the longest running education program in the history of the Rochester Art Center. Students work both individually and collaboratively to create both traditional and experimental art projects. Last year, the students created oil paintings, drawings, skateboard art, music videos, stop-action animation, puppet show performances, environmental installations and much more. Each project is introduced with relevant artist examples, theories, and hands-on instruction. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet and work with visiting artists on specialized processes and projects such as photography, paper making or sound art. The focus of the camp is to introduce creative problem solving, technical skills, and to have fun making art. • Rescue Kids (Gr. 4-5) introduces children to first aid procedures. Rescue Kids includes information on choking, water safety, bicycle and car safety, and avoiding drugs and other harmful substances. Each child receives an activity book (that reinforces what they learn in a fun and interesting way) and a mini first aid kit. • Red Cross Babysitting Course (Ages 11-13)
This course will prepare youth ages 11-13 years to be responsible baby-sitters. Course includes: interviewing for a job, handling emergencies, selecting safe toys and games, supervising
children, feeding and dressing infants, mini first aid for choking, rescue breathing, and child growth and development. Class fee includes handouts and a mini first aid kit. The course is taught by certified American Red Cross instructors. Students MUST attend the required hours listed and be at least 11 years old before class begins. Bring a lunch. • Goodman Productions: Stars and Stripes
Forever (Gr. 2-12). Goodman Productions will be coming to help us present their very popular program, "Stars and Stripes Forever!" It's a musical tribute to our local military. They
are looking for singers in grades 2- 12. Please come with a short prepared song to sing on the first day! The students will be performing a variety of patriotic songs. Come join us for an exciting week of singing and dancing. The final performance will be on Friday, April 4 at 7:00 PM. No experience is necessary. This class will meet Monday through Friday. Our departure is at 8:15 a.m. from the Recreation Center west parking lot by coach bus to meet the train in Winona. After the train ride, we will stop at Chuck E. Cheese for lunch. Two slices of pizza, pop, and 20 tokens are included in the fee. We will arrive back at the Recreation Center at 3:00 p.m. An adult must register and attend with students. Minimum age is 2 years. Using the same techniques professionals use, learn how to capture motion and make your own short animated movie with clay figures.
• Two-Faced Theater Drama Camp. Five-day session: $175. Grades 3-6: Monday-Friday, Aug 4-8, 9am-3:30pm. Grades 6-10: Monday-Friday, Aug 11-15, 9am-3:30pm. Double your character in this drama camp! Learn how to create a mask and use it to develop a new character – to play two radically different characters onstage at once. Performance for family and friends on Friday.
• Run with Scissors! Textile Camp. Five-day session for grades 3 and up: $198. Monday-Friday, July 21-25, 9am-3pm. Get “hooked on crochet, learn how to create felted bowls, turn your old blue jeans in to wearable art with a bleach pen, and use a sewing machine to design something wearable with eco-savvy and sustainable means.
• Finger Play in Clay: Handbuilding Camp. Five-day session: $130. Grades 1-4: Tuesday-Monday (skip weekend), July 29-Aug 4; 10am-noon. Grades 4-7: Tuesday-Monday (skip weekend), July 29-Aug 4; 1-3pm. Build miniature landscapes and structures in clay: skateboard parks, ocean floors and extraterrestrial playgrounds! Paint and glaze your walls, waves and mountains.
• Munchkin Art Camp: Preschool Camp. Five-day session for ages 3-6: $115. Tuesday-Monday (skip weekend), July 29-Aug 4; 10am-noon. Painting, clay projects, puppet theater, songs, movement and snacks in a safe, nurturing environment.
HEALING ADVENTURES CAMP
Healing Adventures Camp is a free one-day camp for children and teens (ages 5 - 18 years) who have experienced a loss. The Mayo Hospice Program invites you to participate in the Healing Adventures Camp. Camp will be held Saturday, October 25, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are a variety of emotions and feelings when a young person experiences the death of an important person in his or her life. Campers will have the opportunity to spend time with other children who have had a similar experience and meet with trained grief facilitators who will encourage discussion on loss, grief, healing and new beginnings. Campers will be assigned to age-appropriate groups and will participtae in a variety of activities, including: nature walks, crafts, rock wall climbing, music and petting zoo. CAMP INVENTION Camp Invention - A hands-on science and creativity day camp so fun, they won't even realize they're learning! Students entering grades 1-6, participate in 5 exciting modules taught by local educators each day. This year there are two Camp Invention options: the all new Imagine curriculum (June 23-27, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and the always popular Create curriculum (June 9-13, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). ROCHESTER AREA FAMLY Y DAY CAMP Rochester Area Family Y Discovery Y Summer Day Camp will be held June 6 through August 31. Program Hours: 9:00am - 4:00pm. Free Extended Hours: 6:30 a.m.- 6:00pm. Kids must be entering grades 1-6 in Fall 2008. Children are separated into age-appropriate groups: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade ( Explorers ) in one group; 4th, 5th, and 6th grade ( Adventurers ) in another group. Every week each group will go on an exciting short field trip ( TREK ) and a wonderful long field trip ( VOYAGE ). The groups will engage in many different activities centered around a different theme each week. They will go swimming, complete arts and crafts activities, and have a blast each week at the Y! Field trips include water parks, Minnesota Twins game, historic Fort Snelling, and more. There is no additional cost for any of the field trips!
Y's SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY CAMP Science, Engineering, and Technology Day Camp for students ages 11 - 14. Each week campers will be able to learn and experience new things. Approximately half of the day is spent working on the science module and the other half devoted to traditional camp activities. Campers might spend the morning designing a robot and then the afternoon swimming or going on a field trip. Camps are offered June through August in one-week sessions and include Legos Robotics, Bridge Design, Environmental Engineering, Musical Instruments Engineering. CAMP KINGDOM KIDS Kingdom Kids offers week-long, 3-day, or 2-day camps for kids ages 4 through 12.
